by Gordon James

In a court decision that is bad news for, a default judgment was handed down by a Texas court on August 10, 2017, in favor of Craig Wright and his companies. The decision prompted the website to remove the bitcoin whitepaper from their website.

A South African judge ruled on Friday that cryptocurrency must remove the Bitcoin whitepaper, which Craig Wright had submitted as evidence. The decision was reached after Wright failed to demonstrate to the court that he was the only person with the right to make changes to the whitepaper.

Craig Wright is a technology entrepreneur originating from Australia. He is the person who in 2013 invented the algorithm that created Bitcoin, which since then has gained an international reputation as the cryptocurrency with the highest market capitalization in the world (more than $30 billion). However, in 2016 he published a whitepaper as part of his presumed work for his doctoral thesis, in which he presented his prediction about the future of Bitcoin, which he called “Bit Gold”.

Craig Wright, self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto and Bitcoin SV supporter, has won a copyright infringement lawsuit by for publishing a white paper on bitcoin.

Wright won the case in absentia after the pseudo-owner of the Cøbra site decided to drop the defense. must now withdraw the document, publish a notice of the decision and pay at least £35,000 ($48,600) to cover Wright’s legal fees. Sebra responded to the court’s decision on Twitter:

I don’t think you can get a better advertisement for *why* Bitcoin is needed than what happened today.

The rules applied by cryptocurrency are far more sophisticated than those based on who can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in a lawsuit.

Onter LLP, Wright’s legal representative, celebrated the victory as a significant development in Dr. Wright’s pursuit of judicial protection of the copyrights to his white papers.

Dr. Wright did not want to limit access to his white paper, wrote Simon Cohen, senior counsel at Onter. However, he disagrees that it is being used by proponents and developers of alternative assets, such as Bitcoin Core, to promote or misrepresent these assets as bitcoin because they do not support or agree with the vision for bitcoin outlined in his white paper.
